Man arrested after
?5m drugs seized

by David Skentelbery
POLICE have seized drugs, believed to be worth up to ?5 million, following a morning raid in Culcheth, Warrington.
Officers, working in conjunction with Northumbria Police, targeted an address in Doeford Close where they discovered more than 50 kilos of heroin and two handguns.
A 32-year-old man from Warrington has been arrested and is currently helping with enquiries.
DCI Steve Gould said: ?This is an excellent result; not only for Cheshire Police, but also for the communities we serve.
?Drug dealing is a serious threat to the quality of life in our communities. Research shows that there is a link between drug use and crime; around three-quarters of crack and heroin users steal to feed their habit.?
He added: ?Our priority is to focus on disrupting local drug markets by targeting suppliers as well as the dealers and today we have done just that ? but the challenge remains.
?Ultimately, we need to target those who run the organised crime networks that are behind local dealers. If we do that we will reduce other crime as well as protecting our local communities.
?By providing the police with community intelligence on drug dealers and suppliers living beyond their means, residents can make a real difference to the areas in which they live and can contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.?

Fly-tipping can cost
a ?50,000 fine
by Lesley Wilkinson

ILLEGAL dumping of waste, including tyres, bags of rubbish and even a stereo system, is causing a problem for Warrington’s environmental services team.
Sites in Dewhurst Avenue, Birchwood, and Davis Way, Lymm, are hot spots for illegal fly-tipping according to the council.
Officers warn that those responsible could face a fine of up to ?50,000, and urge people to use the recycling system instead.
Fly tipping means certain types of waste are not being disposed of properly and is causing damage to the environment and extra costs to the council.
They say items such as the stereo system need to be disposed of properly under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations.
The council reports that residents are steadily increasing the borough’s recycling rate and are using the various methods of recycling available across the borough.
Officers urge people to recycle responsibly and say if there are no facilities at a site to recycle items, people should take them away or locate a site that has facilities.
Trade use of recycling sites is not permitted and officers urge people to report incidences of this or fly tipping.
Coun Brian Axcell, executive member for environment services, said: “We want to maintain good recycling facilities, however, it is costing the council money to remove fly-tipped items and it also makes the sites unappealing to those residents who do want to recycle properly.”
Anyone who needs advice on rubbish disposal or wants to report fly-tipping should contact the council’s environment services on 01925 443000 or visit www.warrington.gov.uk
