on fast food outlet

by David Skentelbery

SHOTS were fired during an armed raid on a fast food outlet at Warrington.
The late night robbery was at Burger King at the junction of Newton Road and Delph Lane, Winwick Quay around 10pm.
A masked man burst in, brandishing a long barrelled gun and threatened terrified staff.
He demanded money and fired several shots at the safe.
Eventually he made off with a quantity of cash. It is believed he ran along Delph Lane at the rear of the adjoining B&Q store.
No-one was hurt in the incident but members of staff were left badly shocked.
Police say the man was about 5ft 8-10 inches tall, of slim build. He was wearing a green and grey hooded top, with either mask or a hat and scarf to disguise his face.
He wore black gloves and dark or black trousers, with a white stripe and white training shoes.
He was captured on CCTV cameras and police hope to be able to issue stills from these next week.
Anyone who witnessed the robbery or who has any information about the offender is urged to contact police

Amy’s talent shines
through in song contest

by Terry Johnson

A SINGER with a student punk band from Warrington has been named winner of the new Bacardi DJ Vocal competition.
Amy Higgins, 20, is now set to launch a singing career and will also work towards gaining a degree in music teaching.
“I just couldn’t believe it when I was given the news that I had won this contest”, said Amy. “It was fantastic to go to London and work in a recording studio with top producer, Hal Ritson, at The Vineyard studios” – formerly Pete Waterman’s ‘Hit Factory’.
“It was such a great experience”.
Amy has graduated from ATM’s performing musician course at Warrington Collegiate. While there she joined punk band, The Defects.
Hal said: “She is a natural performer and composer. Despite little previous studio experience, she delivered exactly what was required for the Bacardi DJ on-line music mixer.
“I feel sure we shall be hearing more from her in the future”.

Warning to elderly
as tricksters strike

by John Hendon

POLICE have issued a warning to elderly people in Warrington following a series of distraction burglaries across the town.
Four similar offences took place yesterday (Friday) ? three of them within half-a-mile of each other ? and although police cannot say the same offenders are responsible for all of them, the methods used were almost identical.
A 69-year-old Grappenhall woman answered the door to two men claiming to be from Social Services. While one kept her talking the other went upstairs and stole property from a bedroom wardrobe.
Three other offences followed soon afterwards. A man posing as a Water Board official got away with property from a 94-year-old man in Westy Lane.
A woman aged 89 in Boulting Avenue had property stolen by a man who asked her to switch her water off because building work was taking place nearby.
Then a 70-year-old man in Hale Street was duped by two men posing as Water Board officials.
Police believe that in each case, a second person, or persons, entered the houses while the householder was distracted by the first man.
A spokeswoman said: ?It is too early to say if these offences are linked, but it is possible. We are asking elderly people in Warrington to take care and not allow strangers into their homes.
?We also would like the population generally to act as good neighbours and report anything they see which could be suspicious.?
The number to ring with information is 0845 458 0000.
