Doctor pledges ?3,000
to child cancer charity

by Terry Johnson

A WARRINGTON doctor is putting her best foot forward to climb Africa’s highest mountain…and is also pledging up to ?3,000 of her own money to a children’s cancer charity.
Dr Elizabeth Mirski, of Lymm, an “out of practice” fell walker, has set herself the personal challenge of climbing 19,000ft Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
She wants to raise ?3,000 sponsorship money for UK leading children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.
Elizabeth and husband, Gordon, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Warrington Hospital, will match pound-for-pound the money donated, up to a maximum ?3,000.
Said Elizabeth, 49, a part-time GP, locum and mum to two daughters: “I am keen to raise money for CLIC Sargent which supports families who have a child affected by cancer.
“Every 48 hours, 10 children are diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia. The charity acts as a lifeline – keeping families together when the unimaginable happens. The charity provides clinical, psychosocial emotional and financial care and support to them and their families”.
Elizabeth is seeking support in fundraising and plans a charity garden party with live jazz on Friday, June 30, at her home in Whitbarrow Road, Lymm. Businesses in Lymm and Stockton Heath have so far donated prizes in a raffle.
People wishing to support the appeal should contact 01925-752532 or visit the Justgiving online sponsor form at www.justgiving.com/mirski
Elizabeth is training in the Lake District for the African climb on September 23. Main problems she will face during the five-day trek are fatigue and altitude sickness.

Student pilots start
to spread their wings

THE new intake of student pilots at Priestley College, Warrington, started their flying training programme with Shropshire Aero Club.
During their two years at the college, the students can train for their European Private Pilot?s Licence on the course, which is unique in the UK.
Eleven youngsters are learning to fly and practical sessions take place at Sleap Airfield, Shropshire, and at the Civil Aviation Ground School at the college.
The course also assists potential RAF pilots in their preparation for the selection board at the Air Force College, Cranwell.
Students study air law, human performance, meteorology and navigation as well as working for their normal advanced level studies.
The college has links with one of the main commercial flying training schools in Europe at Jerez in Spain, and students will visit the school during their course. They will also enjoy visits to the Farnborough Air Show and the RAF open day at Waddington near Lincoln.

Donating to charity –
without any cost!

by Lesley Wilkinson

A CHARITY that helps youngsters from Warrington who run away from home is hoping that local people will join its scheme to donate money – without it costing them anything.
The Relationships Centre has signed up to be a beneficiary of www.everyclick.com which gives money to charity. People using it will help raise funds for the centre’s Talk..Don’t Walk project.
More than 100,000 youngsters run away in Britain each year and many end up sleeping rough, in phone boxes, in derelict buildings or parks.
Project organisers are hoping that Warrington people will make the company their default home page and use it when shopping or searching the web.

Store cuts “food miles”
by buying local spuds

by Lesley Wilkinson

SHOPPERS at a Warrington store have the opportunity to try locally-grown potatoes – as part of a scheme to reduce “food miles.”
The project is part of a national campaign aimed at reducing the distance food is transported to the customer. The potatoes, on sale at Sainsbury’s in Warrington, have been grown within 10 miles of the store.
Local growers John and David Stubbs, of Aston near Frodsham, will be supplying the potatoes to the store, just hours after they have been harvested.
The potatoes, known for their distinct taste and freshness, will be available at the store for a limited time only.
The scheme was first introduced in 2003, in Shropshire, and was so successful that it has expanded with nine growers supplying 26 stores.
John Stubbs said: “This is a great crop of new potatoes. Harvesting the potatoes and delivering them within the same day began at 5.00 this morning and the potatoes were delivered into the store just two hours later.”
