COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington have drawn up proposals for the provision of a “belief/quiet room” for Town Hall staff.
The room will be in the New Town House/Quattro building in Buttermarket Street, where there is currently no provision.
A report to the borough council’s Building Stronger Communities Policy committee points out it is unlawful to discriminate against staff in any aspect of their employment because of their religion or belief.
Some religions require their followers to pray or hold belief observance at specific times of the day, so staff may request access to a quiet place, or belief observance room, to undertake religious observance.
While there is no legal requirement for employers to provide such a room, it is considered good employee relations practice to set aside a quiet room or area for prayer or private contemplation.
Such a room could also be welcomed by staff who have returned to work following bereavement.
The report states that there is capacity within New Town House and the Quattro building to provide a staff “belief/quiet room” and it is considered that such a facility will help support the mental wellbeing of staff.
