READING for just six minutes a day can reduce stress levels by as much as two-thirds.
Warrington’s LiveWire libraries are promoting a range of feel-good reads to help people grab a bit of relaxation in their busy day by borrowing a book from the local library and building six minutes reading time into each day.
Research by Mindlab International revealed that reading is the best way to relax.
It proved that reading works better than listening to music, having a cup of tea, taking a walk or playing computer games. People only needed to read silently for six minutes to slow down the heart rate and ease tension in the muscles.
Jan Puzylo, LiveWire’s development librarian for reading said: “We have thousands of free books to choose from, both in libraries and through our e-book collection.
“LiveWire’s friendly library staff can also help users to develop their reading, through reading groups, and recommended books for any taste or interest.”
Dr David Lewis, cognitive neuropsychologist with Mindlab said: “It really doesn’t matter what book you read. By losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world.”
