Planners try again over youth cafe

PLANNING bosses are to make a second attempt to reach a decision over an application to build a temporary, “open-café-style space” at the rear of Bridgewater High School, Appleton, Warrington.
The facility would be used by the Broomfields Youth Project, a charity consisting of a partnership between the school, Cheshire Police, Live Wire leisure services and local churches, which operates a youth club on Friday evenings.
Members of the borough council’s planning committee have already looked at the proposals once – but deferred a decision for a site visit after hearing concern has been raised by nearby residents about anti-social behaviour and criminal damage caused by youths using the facility.
Appleton Parish Council supports the scheme.
Planning officers say the proposed structure would be of a temporary nature and would be utilitarian in design and construction. While not of the highest architectural quality, it would harmonise with the design of the existing leisure centre.
The Broomfield Youth Project has the support of local police and two Police Community Support Officers are based at the leisure centre every Friday night.
