A WARRINGTON man has been fined £50 for allowing his dog to foul the footpath only yards away from his home.
The dog-owner, from Howley, had to fork out the fixed penalty charge when a passing borough council enforcement officer spotted what was happening.
An enforcement officer said: “It would have been a lot cheaper for the man to have carried a plastic bag so he could pick up after his dog. “There’s quite a lot you can do with £50 in the run-up to Christmas that would have been more fun than paying a fine.”
Cllr David Keane, the council’s lead member for environment and public protection, said: “Failing to clean up after a dog is not only unpleasant and a nuisance to your neighbours but dangerous as well, as dog faeces can spread infections.
“With a canine population estimated at eight million, with British dogs producing approximately 1,000 tonnes of excrement every day, it costs the UK a staggering £22 million to clean up dog mess.
“We would encourage people to report anyone who allows their dog to foul by calling 01925 443322 so that we can hold them accountable for their actions”.
