FEMALE rugby league referee Tara Jones scooped top honours at the joint Warrington & Widnes Rugby League Referee Society’s annual presentation night.
Tara was named Warrington Rugby League Referee Society’s Referee of the Year, after a successful season on the field which saw her named as part of the Champion Schools referee squad, and officiate at Wembley during the curtain raiser to the 2013 Challenge Cup final.
This season also saw her referee her first Scholarship match, and take her first steps on the RFL match official’s pathway as a referee. Her award was presented by former Super League Grand Final and Challenge Cup final referee Karl Kirkpatrick.
Society Development Officer and former first-grade match official John Blacklock said: “Tara’s achievements throughout the 2013 season have been impressive.
“She has shown commitment and hard work to get into the position she is in now, and is an outstanding match official for her age. The fact she is female has no bearing on the rewards she is receiving and higher profile matches she is being appointed to.”
The night turned into double success for the Jones family as newly elected vice-chairman Brian Jones, father to Tara, picked up the Joe Manley Cup for services to the Warrington society away from the rugby field.
Junior official Connor Mitton-Jones picked up the Warrington RLRS Junior Referee of the Year award, while Jamie Butterfield was presented with the Warrington RLRS Most Improved Referee of the Year.
Special awards were presented to Warrington society members Phil Bentham and Matthew Thomason for refereeing the 2013 Challenge Cup final and 2013 Championship Grand Final respectively.
Meanwhile Widnes official Dylan Ward scooped two awards from his society’s collection of annual awards.
Dylan received the Widnes RLRS Junior Match Official of the Year award and Widnes RLRS Society Member of the Year award.
Widnes RLRS Senior Match Official of the Year went to Andy Fazackerley, while Chris Campbell and Adam Gill were both presented with the Harold Worth Memorial Award.
