POLICE cordoned off part of the Golden Square shopping centre at Warrington this morning after a section of the roof collapsed.
The incident was near Shipton’s jewellers’ shop.
A boy, aged 11, from Urmston, was struck on the head by falling debris and suffered minor cuts.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance accompanied by a family member but is not thought to be seriously hurt.
It is believed the collapse could have been caused by a build-up of water on the roof of the shopping centre following heavy rain.
The Health and Safety Executive and Warrington Borough Council have been informed of the incident.
Investigations are continuing.

I can’t believe that it was so poorly designed that rain build-up can occur, then again I have seen many award winning designs that were a joke, so shouldn’t really be surprised that we have paid for one of them.
I dont suppose it would be anyting to do with the tarpaulin cover they have had draped over the roof near Boots at all would it! (Been there a long time too!) Any market trader knows how they gather up the water into great big bulges. Either way, like you say, when an “award winning design” is “mended” with plastic market covers I guess its a sign off neglegence or at best poor maintenance!
Something I hope the Health and Safety Executive look into for the boys families sake and the future customers.
