Volunteer digital champions wanted

DOZENS of volunteers are wanted at Warrington to become “Digital Champions” – helping local people to boost their computer literacy.
The borough council and a number of partner organisations want to recruit volunteers to help the estimated 19,000 adults across the borough who have no internet access at home – or lack the basic skills they need to make the most of the web.
Cllr Hitesh Patel, the council’s lead member for communications, said: “Our new Digital Champions won’t need to be IT experts. They’ll need basic online skills and good communication skills, a passion for helping others to get online and the patience to answer questions. And they’ll need to be able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of five hours between January and May next year.
“In return they’ll receive full support and training, a certificate and experience that will enhance their CV. But most importantly of all, they’ll have the satisfaction that comes from helping other people make a difference to their lives.”
The scheme is being run by a group of agencies in Warrington, including the council, Golden Gates Housing Trust, LiveWire and Warrington Voluntary Action, in partnership with digital charity Go ON UK.
Volunteers will be able to sign up online between October 14 and November 22 via Warrington Voluntary Action’s website, www.warringtonva.org.uk.
