A WARRINGTON woman fraudulently obtained benefit totalling £9,499 by falsely claiming she was a single person.
In fact, Catherine Nixon, 35, of Sandy Lane, Orford was living with a partner who was working full time, Halton Magistrates’ Court was told.
She admitted three offences of benefit fraud and was given a 12-month supervised community order and ordered to pay £85 costs.
She was also ordered to repay the money.
The court was told Nixon obtained £5,260 housing benefit and £842 council tax benefit from Warrington Borough Council and £3,397 income support from the Department of Work and Pensions.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits and exchequer services manager, said: “All benefit theft is crime. There are no exceptions and that is why the council is determined to bring fraudsters to justice.”
