Hospital misses out on funding boost

WARRINGTON Hospital has missed out on a share of a £250 million fund to help A&E departments cope with increased pressure during the winter months.
The Government has given 53 NHS Trust a share of the hand-out – and pledged another £250 million over the next two years.
But Warrington Hospital will not receive any of the funding – and this has angered local MP Helen Jones.
The Warrington North MP said: “At a time when the Health Secretary warns us all of a winter A&E crisis, he has made it crystal clear that the Tory-Lib Dem Government are happy to let the people of Warrington take a hit.
“Why has our hospital been given nothing whilst other hospital Trusts are given as much as £12 million?”
The extra funding comes as part of the Government’s initiative to improve care for vulnerable older people and alleviate pressure on A&E.
Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt says on the Government website: “This winter is going to be tough– that’s why the Government is acting now to make sure patients receive a great, safe service, even with the added pressures the cold weather brings.”
But Ms Jones said Mr Hunt had completely overlooked services at Warrington
She added: “Since May 2010 the North West has lost over 1,100 nurses and this figure is rising. Over 3,000 patients have had to wait more than four hours this year as our A&E department strives to provide
a valued service under significant pressure.
“However, the Tory-Lib Dem Government has yet again chosen not to stand up for the people of Warrington, but deliver another blow by giving
our local hospital nothing in this additional support package”
