ABOUT 2,000 people packed into Grappenhall Cricket Club’s Broad Lane ground for the fund-raising Legends match.
The day started with a Grappenhall XI taking on Warrington Wolves as part of Ben Westwood’s testimonial – a game which the Wolves won by six runs.
Ben himself scored 21 in the Twenty20 game, with Wolves scoring 167. Grappenhall were bowled out for 161, with Lee Briers and Joel Monaghan starring with the ball and Richie Myler taking two catches behind the stumps.
Afterwards, Ben Westwood confessed he had only ever played cricket previously at school.
But he said the Wolves had some good cricketers in their squad.
Later, an England Legends XI were defeated by an Australian Legends XI, bolstered by former Pakistan Test star Wasim Akram.
Big names in the England XI included Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, Mark Ramprekash and Neil Fairbrother while famous Aussies on show included Jeff Thomson, Simon Katich and Damien Martyn.
Money raised on the day was for Ben Westwood’s Testimonial and the Andrew Flintoff Foundation, a children’s charity working for child rehabilitation and physiotherapy units across the country.
