POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman suffered a fractured finger and toe and other injuries as she bravely tried to hold on to her handbag during a terrifying robbery in Warrington during broad daylight.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon (July 8) in Orford Avenue at around 2.25pm when the victim ? a 71-year-old woman ? was walking home from Warrington town centre when she was approached from behind by an unknown man who grabbed hold of her handbag.
The victim initially kept hold of the bag and the man dragged the woman to the ground and along the floor. At this point the victim has let go of the bag and the offender fled the scene on foot into a nearby alleyway.
The victim was taken to Warrington Hospital for treatment to her injuries ? these included a fractured finger, a fractured toe, damage to the ligament in her left shoulder, a graze to her hip and swelling to the left wrist.
DC John Rhodes said: “This was a terrifying experience for the victim and she has been left extremely shaken by what has happened. We take any incidents of robbery extremely seriously and are currently carrying out a number of enquiries in a bid to trace the offender.
“This incident took place in the middle of the afternoon in a busy area and I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed what happened or has been in the area around that time and has seen anyone acting suspiciously to get in touch.
“I would also appeal to anyone who knows the identity of the offender or may have seen him fleeing the scene to come forward.
“The handbag is a black leather shoulder bag and had a beige purse inside ? this is still outstanding and I would urge anyone who may come across the bag to contact police immediately.”
The man is described as having a tanned complexion, believed to be aged in his 20s with short dark hair. He was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and had a tattoo on the lower part of his leg.
Anyone with any information, which could assist officers with their enquiries, is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 558 of 8 July. Information can also be passed on anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
