MP backs travel investment

MP David Mowat has welcomed government plans to increase spending on roads and railways around Warrington.
It announced its long-term plan to repair and update our infrastructure, bringing the rail network in to the 21st century, securing future energy infrastructure and includes the biggest programme of investment in our roads since the 1970s.
The MP (pictured, right) said: “These will make a real difference to all of us who live in Warrington and show this Government is delivering for hardworking people.
“Britain is in a global race, competing with countries investing billions in their infrastructure. In the past, we stood still while they moved forward. This Government has made good progress since 2010 to reverse that trend and these new plans build on that progress.”
The package includes:
• £800 million on the Manchester Motorway Scheme: M60 from Denton to Sharston; the M62 between Birchwood and Eccles; the M6 from Crewe to Knutsford and from the M62 to Ashton-in-Makerfield; and the M56 Junction from Stretton to Frodsham. Subject to finalisation of options.
• A feasibility study to consider problems and solutions on trans-Pennine routes.
• Up to £30 million through the innovative earn-back scheme to support infrastructure investment as part of the Manchester City Deal.
This builds on previous announcements:
• Electrification of the Chat Moss line – reducing journey times and improving services between Liverpool and Manchester.
• The Northern Hub project to improve connections between towns and cities across the North.
• £230 million on the South East Manchester Multi Modal Strategy: A6 and Manchester Airport Relief Road.
• Trafford Metrolink.
• £319 million of the Regional Growth Fund has been invested in the North West to date.
