Woodland could be destroyed fear

WORRIED residents fear a community woodland, established at Warrington seven years ago, could be destroyed if plans for two new play areas are approved.
Twenty nearby residents have objected to plans for landscaping and play equipment on land at Our Wood, off Whittle Avenue, Whittle Hall and Missouri Drive, Chapelford.
The plans have been put forward by developers David Wilson Homes. Outline proposals were approved in 2002 and the new plans are revised detailed plans.
They involve play equipment, pathways, carved wooden animals and tree planting at Our Wood and play equipment and a new pond at Missouri Drive.
Twenty residents have objected on the grounds Our Wood – opened in 2006 – would be destroyed, that the pond would be a danger to children and that the site will become a place where gangs of youths loiter. However, six letters of support for the proposals have been received.
Our Wood was opened in 2006 following a campaign by Great Sankey Parish Council, the Great Sankey North Residents’ Association and a local “Kids Committee”.
The initiative impressed the then Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Linda Dirir, so much that she planted a tree there herself.
Planning officers are recommending the proposals be approved.
They say the land at Missouri Drive was always intended for a play area while the introduction of play equipment at Our Wood, while a new concept, will not have any detrimental impact on the existing landscape. However, a number of trees will have to be removed.
The plans have been amended to introduce a knee high fence around the pond to meet safety concerns.
However, planners stress that the ultimate responsibility with regard to safety with lie with parents.
