Road safety awareness drive

FIREFIGHTERS spoke to young drivers about road safety as part of an awareness drive at Warrington and Birchwood Fire Stations.
They demonstrated how they extricate casualties from vehicles and students were able to use beer goggles on a driving simulator to show how what it’s like when driving under the influence of alcohol.
Stockton Heath firefighters held a similar event at Priestley College for students on the Public Services course, as part of the United Nation’s Decade of Action Road Safety Week.
Martin Dowle, Community Safety Manager at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Working in partnership with the Police we deliver many initiatives and campaigns to drive down the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
“For the UN Decade of Action’s National Road Safety Week, which is supported by the Chief Fire Officers’ Association, we also worked with other road safety professionals and stakeholders to deliver key road safety messages to the general public at a variety of locations across Cheshire.”
The UN launched the project to help stabilise and then reduce global road deaths by 2020, and this year’s theme is aimed at young people.
Fire crews and staff worked alongside colleagues from Cheshire Police to deliver the events.
