A 16-YEAR-OLD girl died at Warrington early today – possibly as a result of taking an illegal substance.
Police have not released the girl’s name but her family have been informed.
It was shortly after 3.30am this morning that police and the ambulance service were called to a house in Warrington to a report of a girl with breathing difficulties.
The girl did not live at the house, but was there with a small group of teenagers.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics and medical staff, the girl died just before 5M.
A police spokeswoman said: “Officers investigating this tragic death are looking at the possibility that the girl may have taken an illegal substance, prior to becoming ill.
“Police enquiries have commenced, and are focused on establishing the movements of the deceased during the evening prior to her death. A post mortem will take place in due course which will provide insight into the exact cause of this tragic death, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Police said many schools and colleges broke up this weekend in preparation for the exam period, and many young people would be enjoying socialising and parties tonight.
“While the exact cause of this tragic death needs to be fully established, police would like to ask everyone to be mindful of this tragedy, and to enjoy themselves safely.”
Superintendent Martin Cleworth, of the Warrington Police Command Team said: “Our thoughts this morning are with the family and friends of the young girl who lost her life. Specially trained police officers are providing support to them.
“Our investigations into the cause of her death are at an early stage, and I would appeal for public help and support in progressing these.
“I would also like to re-iterate the message, and to young people in particular, around the dangers of taking any illegal substance.”
Anyone who has any information which could assist officers investigating the death of the 16-year-old girl, is asked to contact Warrington Police on the Police non emergency number 101.
Police would also ask that anyone who is offered illegal substances, or has any concerns, makes contact with Warrington Police . Alternatively, information can be left anonymously on the Crimestoppers hotline 0800 555 111.
