Labour hold off UKIP challenge

LABOUR have held off a challenge from the UK Independence Party in a by-election for a seat on Birchwood Parish Council.
In a straight fight, Labour’s Jill Bolton polled 184 votes to 101 for UKIP’s Geoff Siddall.
There was a 24 per cent turnout.
Meanwhile, there will be a by-election for a vacant seat on Winwick Parish Council on Thursday, May 30, following the resignation of Cllr Alan Smith.
Five candidates have announced they will be standing. They are: Kath Cookson (Ind), Andrew Fairfoul (UKIP), Michael Matthews (Labour), David Shaw (Independent), Carole Ann Thewsey (Conservative).
The deadline to register to vote in this election, for new postal vote applications or changes to existing arrangements is no later than Tuesday May 14.
Polling stations will be open between 7am and 10pm and the polling station is Winwick Leisure Centre, Myddleton Lane, Winwick. Polling cards are not being issued.
