Literature festival hailed a success

WARRINGTON’S first-ever literature festival has been declared a huge success – not just by book fans but also by authors who took part.
The event spanned 13 days and a number of venues across the town.
It was organised by Culture Warrington and partner organisation LiveWire.
The festival started with Liverpool author Deborah Morgan signing copies of her book “Disappearing Home” at Penketh Library.
Published “history detective” Janice Hayes gave a presentation about Warrington’s rich industrial history when she explored historical pictures of Warrington as an old mill town.
She also read extracts of her book “Warrington At Work” and answered questions on how to write for a historical genre.
Journalist and magazine editor Claire Gillman visited the Pyramid and delivered a workshop on how to write non-fiction and make money out of freelance writing.
World Book Night was celebrated by giving away books to the public at The Pyramid and Warrington Bus Interchange.
The festival ended with “The Paper Cut” poetry slam at the Pyramid. Compere was Tony Walsh, who was the Glastonbury Poet-In-Residence in 2011, who also performed some of his award-winning poetry.
An acoustic set was also provided by Oddfellow and I.
Afterwards, author Debbie Morgan said: “It was a pleasure sharing tips on creative writing and publication. The event was well organised, well attended, and everybody I met was friendly and enthusiastic about reading and writing.”
Janey Moran, senior arts development officer at Culture Warrington said:
“I’m very pleased with how well Warrington’s first ever literature festival was received.
“The events were attended by a range of people with a shared passion for reading, writing and poetry. The success of the festival is all down to talented local groups and individuals.”
Editor Claire Gillman said: “I was delighted by the support shown by the public. The audiences appeared passionate about writing. They listened with great interest to the talk and asked extremely pertinent questions. They were warm and welcoming and we all had a great time”.
