77,000 will pay less tax

ABOUT 77,000 ordinary basic rate taxpayers in Warrington will see their income tax cut for the third year in the row – and the Liberal Democrats are claiming the credit.
The reduction will mean their total income tax cut since the General Election is £600, according to Cllr Ian Marks, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Warrington Borough Council.
He said: “This is a giant leap towards the Liberal Democrat goal of a fairer tax system.”
On April 6, the personal allowance was raised to £9,440 – the largest rise ever, said Cllr Marks.
He said: “Thanks to the rise in the point at which you start to pay income tax, the number of lowest paid people who have been lifted out of paying any income tax altogether will reach nearly 5,000 in the town.
“This tax cut is a real help for ordinary people in these difficult times. It shows how the Liberal Democrat priority in the Coalition Government is to create a fairer society and a stronger economy, enabling everyone to get on in life.
“From next April no-one will pay tax on the first £10,000 they earn giving a tax cut of £700.”
Cllr Marks said Labour increased taxes by raising the 10p tax rate paid by the lowest paid workers to 20p.
“They now stand on the side-lines denying their responsibility for the economic mess they created. People still can’t trust them to make the right decisions on the economy.
“At the same time, we know that you can’t trust the Tories to deliver a fairer society.
“It is thanks to the Liberal Democrats that 24m basic rate taxpayers are getting an income tax cut. At the same time, Liberal Democrats in the Coalition are cracking down on tax avoidance and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share.”

  1. Odd time to be claiming this at the same time as their benefits cuts kick in and they also give massive tax breaks to banks and millionaires – but then that’s the reality of life in Britain with the Yellow Tories!
