Town hit by grass fires

A SERIES of grass fires has kept firefighters busy in the Warrington area over the last 24 hours – some believed to have been started deliberately.
Police are investigating a blaze off Capesthorne Road, Orford which involved an area of land about 10m square. Firefighters used beaters to extinguish it.
Earlier there was a similar fire involving 20 square metres of land off Grasmere Avenue, Orford and another fire, on land off Bridgewater Avenue, Latchford, involved about 20 square metres. Beaters and a hose reel jet were required to extinguish this blaze.
Police appealed for anyone who knew who had been responsible for starting any of the fires to call them on 101.
A spokesman warned that there could be serious consequences if a more serious fire broke out while firefighters were dealing with grass fires.
The extended period of dry weather is making grass fires a serious problem for the fire service.
