WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat dropped in at Warrington’s Foodbacnk – and praised the work being carried out by volunteers.
The Food Bank’s distribution centre is at Friars Green Independent Methodist Church and Mr Mowat (pictured) witnessed at first hand the work taking place to help alleviate food poverty in the town.
He said: “I am glad to know that this support is available for my constituents and that JobCentre Plus are now allowed to refer people directly to the Foodbank so that those who need help can get it straightaway.”
Project co-ordinator John Dolan commented: “We are pleased that one of Warrington’s MPs came to the Foodbank.
“It is an indication of the growing profile of foodbanks and their role in helping people in food poverty.”
Warrington Foodbank is one of more 250 foodbanks operating throughout Great Britain.
Since opening in December, 350 people and 3,000 meals have been served by the foodbank.
The Foodbank is a franchise of the Trussell Trust, an established Christian-based organisation which has now been in operation for more than 10 years. Foodbanks collect non-perishable foods donated by individual donors, churches, schools and businesses. These are then made up into packages, each containing a balanced diet of meals for three days for an individual or a family.
Working with partner agencies and organisations, a voucher system ensures that the foodbank helps alleviate local food poverty.
A report published by Kelloggs and the Trussell Trust states that at least 4.7 million Britons could be described as living in food poverty.
