Councillor to be placed in stocks!

IN medieval times, you could find them across the land – but Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council are on the hunt for a set of stocks… so that they can place one of their own councillors in them!
The appeal comes in advance of the village’s annual Community Day, which is held every May on the village green, to raise money for local organisations and good causes.
This year, among the exciting range of events the parish council has planned, one councillor will be placed in the stocks and pelted with wet sponges to raise money for two cancer charities.
The council had identified a supplier for the stocks – but, due to unforeseen circumstances, they can no longer provide them.
Now, Cllr Chris Vobe (pictured) is asking Warrington-Worldwide readers if they can step in and assist.
He said: “The parish council is appealing to any individuals, groups or organisations who own a set of stocks – and are willing to lend them to Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council on Monday, May 6 for a good cause. Every penny from the event will be going directly to two fantastic cancer charities, for which I’ll be raising as much money as possible.
“If you can help with our search, the parish council will make all the arrangements – we’ll collect them from you at your convenience, and they will be returned promptly after Community Day.”
Anyone able to help should get in touch with Cllr Vobe via phone to 01925 419 481 or by email to [email protected]
Who is the councillor to be placed in the stocks? Why, Cllr Vobe, of course.
He will be raising money for Cancer Research UK and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

  1. if you know anybody who has a the time and materials it should not be too long a job to knock up a set of stocks from some plywood a fence post and some other odds and ends. it does depend on whether you need the head and arm type post stocks or the leg stocks which forces you to sit. I am sure some of your locals could knock you a set up in about two hours

  2. Give credit where it is due… A politician who isn’t taking himself too seriously, and poking fun at himself for two undoubtedly worthwhile causes.

It is also a deliciously cutting way of giving a tongue-in-cheek “two fingers” to those councillors who have run a particularly nasty vendetta against him since he was elected by the people. I hope the event raises a lot of money for charity.

  3. I would quite happily buy a set of stocks and stick them on the town hall lawn…. mind you, the amount of use they would get; they would need replacing every two weeks!

  4. Is it necessary to become so agitated, Thatcherite? There seems very little reason for doing so. I’m also not entirely sure how this can be considered a “big smokescreen” (so big, apparently, that it’s worthy of capital letters)? Someone is raising money for two very good causes. Where is the problem?

A smokescreen also implies that something is being covered up, or masked in some way. Would you care to explain what that might be? Your rather excessive reply sounds like someone seeing conspiracy theories where there are none…
