Cycling club scoops awards

CYCLING club North Cheshire Clarion and its chairman and coach Geoff Prince scooped awards and the annual Warrington Sports Awards.
Clarion were voted club of the year while Geoff was name as coach of the year.
The ceremony at Orford Jubilee Neighbour Hood was attended by more than 80 guests, including Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council and Andy Gatcliffe, chief executive of Warrington Wolves.
Also present were Wolves players Chris Riley and Tyrone McCarthy and managing director of LiveWire and Culture Warrington Jan Souness.
The awards recognise and celebrate the sporting achievements of local schools, clubs and residents.
Other winners were: Special recognition award – PCSOs Tom Reid and Tony Spruce; Disabled sports achiever of the year – archer Leigh Walmsley; Junior sports achiever of the year – handball player Stephen Clarke; School sports team of the year – Westbrook Old Hall; Volunteer of the year – Craig Hall; Young volunteer of the year – Tom Stokes.
Winners from seven of the eight categories will go forward to represent the borough at the prestigious Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnership Awards next month.
Following London 2012 a special “Embrace the Games” category has been added to this year’s regional sports awards. Nominees must have used last year’s Olympic and Paralympics Games to inspire others and bring about benefits in their local communities.
