Butchers benefit from horse meat scandal

BUTCHERS on Warrington market are enjoying a boost in business following an increase in demand for fresh locally sourced produce following the horse meat scandal.
According to a You Gov poll carried out by Sky News, one in five people have already changed their shopping habits after the recent scandal with national consumers reportedly turning away from the supermarkets for their meat.
Warrington market trader Roy Sweeney produces his own burgers made from meat local suppliers and has already had customers discuss the scandal with him.
Roy explained that the issue with horsemeat is that it gets delivered to a manufacturer in the form of mince, at which point it is difficult for them to identify what it is other than by the paper work.
All meat delivered to Sweeneys butchers arrives “on the bone” and Roy was quick to produce evidence to qualify the source of the meat, including a certificate issued by the QSM (the Quality Standard Mark for beef and lamb).
He said: “In addition to having a proper audit trail of paperwork we would know by sight if this leg was from a horse… it would be a lot longer!”
“The burgers made at our stall are guaranteed British Steak and that is why we are popular with many local restaurants and businesses.”
All the butchers in the market are keen to encourage customers to ask where products come from. Warrington Market boasts the freshest dairy produce, meat and fish, fruit and vegetables from local suppliers at budget-friendly prices. Why not pop in today and see what’s on the menu for yourself?

  1. Warrington Market is a great source of top quality food. Although supermarkets like Asda have a welcoming customer service, if you want fresh local produce, WM is the place.
