Recycling gathers pace

RECYCLING levels are increasing in Warrington as residents get behind the blue and green bin recycling schemes.
The town’s recycling rate currently stands at just over 43 per cent and the council has committed to raise this to at least 55 per cent by 2020 as part of its waste strategy.
Since blue bins were introduced more than four years ago the council has collected and recycled more than 70,000 tonnes of waste, which is the equivalent to 350 jumbo jets or 6,000 African elephants!
To boost recycling even more in the future, in April and May the council will be moving to alternate weekly bin collections with black bins emptied one week and blue and green bins the following week.
Cllr David Keane (pictured), the borough council’s executive member for environment and public protection, said: “We would like to thank residents for their support and for all their recycling efforts over the last few years. When the waste service changes in spring we hope our brilliant recycling rate will increase even further and we want to make sure local people are preparing for the changes so if you haven’t got a blue bin, make sure you order one.”
Shredded paper, aerosols, clean tin foil, Tetra Pak cartons, plastic yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and clean plastic food trays can be put in blue bins.
