Bridge Street bombs: We must not forget

AN education task group has been set up to ensure that the 1993 IRA bombing of Warrington has a rightful place on the school curriculum.
The decision was made following a meeting between Cllr Mike Hannon (pictured), deputy leader of the borough council, the Rev Stephen Kingsnorth and a group of head teachers from Warrington primary schools.
They discussed the idea of rediscovering and reintroducing this significant event to the local history curriculum.
The task group will now look at how this can be achieved.
Also up for discussion will be the River Of life Memorial in Bridge Street, the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation and Peace Centre, the Guardians, Oliver Cromwell, Town Hall, Cultural Quarter, the Cenotaph, River Mersey and much more of the town’s rich history.
Alongside these discussions, the council and The Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation are planning a commemorative event in March to mark the 20th anniversary of the bombing.
Cllr Hannon said: “We will never forget what happened that day or how we remained united as a town as we moved forward together. This is why we believe it is important that generations of Warrington children are given the opportunity to understand what happened and to learn about the legacies that have come as a result.
“We are aiming to introduce this in time for the start of the new school year in September to coincide with the 20th anniversary year and I look forward to working with schools on this important topic.”
The task group will be set up in the New Year to progress this work with the help of staff from the council’s children and young people’s services.
More information about the commemorative event will also be available early in the New Year.

  1. Likewise I had just been in the market when the first bomb went off near Rylands St, then the huge explosion that killed Tim Parry, can still visualise the poor kids face and poor Bronwyn Vickers with her terrible leg injuries. The sound of the ambulancies still haunt me
