Planners throw out Tesco scheme

SUPERMARKET giants Tesco have been refused permission to install new signage at one of their Warrington stores following claims they were not good neighbours.
The borough’s planning committee threw out the proposals for the Tesco Express store in Orford Green, Orford.
Tesco had sought permission for various illuminated and non-illuminated signs at the store and petrol filling station near to the junction with Poplars Avenue.
But local councillor Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the council, told the committee the store had not been a good neighbour and some residents had moved home to get away.
Five nearby residents lodged objections on the grounds that the existing illumination of the outlet was obstrusive. They said: “This is a residential area – not a retail park.”
Cllr Hannon said the company had continually contravened all previous conditions attached to their existing planning consent.
Planning officers recommended the company’s application be approved. They said Tesco were simply replacing existing signs due to corporate rebranding. Luminance levels would be within recommended limits and the proposals would have no perceived detrimental impact on visual amenity or highway safety in the area.
But the committee went against the advice of the officers and rejected the application.
