Rare birds cause a flap

CROWDS of twitchers who have flocked to Warrington to try and snap pictures of rare birds are causing a flap.
The borough council has received calls from local businesses and residents concerned at the behaviour of the crowds.
Bombycilla Garrulous or Bohemian Waxwing birds have taken up residence in Orford are attracting plenty of attention.
Bird watchers and photographers have flocked to the scene.
A council spokesperson said: “The exotically quiffed birds are drawing a lot of attention from bird enthusiasts and understandably so.
“Unfortunately some local businesses and residents have contacted us with concerns about the crowds and their behaviour so we would urge people to be respectful of private property when trying to capture a photo of the birds.”
The Waxwing doesn’t breed in the UK and most winters the total population numbers fewer than 100 individuals. The species is periodically affected by a poor Rowan berry harvest in regular Scandinavian wintering areas and once the birds have exhausted food supplies there they shift westward to the UK.
Warrington regularly plays host to Waxwings and the junction of Battersby Lane and Forshaw Street has become a firm favourite for the birds.
In previous years flocks in excess of 400 have targeted the Rowan trees in this area.
