Festive festival to be revived

A CHRISTMAS festival not held in Warrington for more than a century is to be revived.
St Andrew’s Fair was once the highlight of the town’s Christmas celebrations, with colourful market stalls, exciting circus and street performers and a bustling livestock market.
There was an opening procession to the Old Market Place – now Golden Square – headed by civic dignitaries and the Town Crier who read out a proclamation to open the event and warned idlers, vagrants and vagabonds to depart!
The fair is making a comeback on December 1.
A town crier will call on shoppers to join in the fun in Bridge Street and Market Gate where there will be modern day market stall, circus and street performances and much more.
Cllr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of the borough council, said: “Being able to provide a festive link between our past and present and celebrate Christmas in the same way our ancestors did all those centuries ago is something to be cherished and enjoyed.”
The festival will be held between 10am and 4pm.
