Improving school must get better

A WARRINGTON primary school where good progress has been made since it was last inspected has been told it requires to improve still further – by July next year.
Ofsted inspectors say pupils at St Andrews Primary, Orford, enjoy school and feel well cared for.
But although pupils reach average standards by the end of Year 6 they do not make the progress expected of them across the school.
The quality of teaching has improved since the last inspection, but it is not yet consistently good across all year groups.
Teachers regularly check how well pupils are doing, but the information gathered is not always accurate, the inspectors report
Systems used to track pupils’ progress do not yet provide the detail needed to help leaders ensure all pupils are achieving as well as they could, they add
The role of subject leaders is not yet full developed and strategic plans do not have sharp enough success criteria.
However, the school’s strengths include:
Warm and supportive relationships with pupils enjoying school and feeling they are cared for; vulnerable pupils are supported well; attendance has improved and is now above the national average.
The Ofsted report adds: “The headteacher’s drive and determination, together with highly committed staff and governors, are moving the school forward.”
By July next year, the school must increase the proportion of good and better teaching and further improve the quality of leadership and management, the report adds.
Headteacher Keith Cahillane said: “This report has recognised many positive aspects of school, and I am confident that we can rise to the challenges in front of us as we move to be the ‘outstanding’ school that these children, their families and the local community deserve.
“The report recognises that we’re a strong team and on the path to improvement having made many changes over the past 12 months. We want to offer an excellent learning experience for our pupils, now and in the future, and with the support of our teaching staff, governing body, parents and local community we are achieving just that.”
*Ofsted have introduced a new inspection framework. A school said to “require improvement” would formerly have been rated “satisfactory.”
