Council missing out on 'Green Deal'

WARRINGTON Borough Council has been accused of failing to capitalise on the Government’s new “Green Deal.”
Liberal Democrat councillors say the council does not appear to be very well organised and, as a result, is missing out on the benefits the deal has to offer.
The “Green Deal” is now underway and is a flagship policy designed to help businesses and homes reduce their energy consumption, save them money and help the country meet its energy reduction and renewable energy targets.
Lib Dem leader on the council, Ian Marks (pictured) said: “The deal provides a massive opportunity for local authorities to leverage multi-million pounds of investment into their areas.
“It seems Warrington is not being as active as it could be.”
Cllr Marks said the Department for Energy and Climate Change had also launched three funds for local authorities.
“The first one is to help combat fuel poverty which is a big problem for too many people in our town. The second is to help launch ‘Green Deal’ initiatives and the third is to encourage collective fuel switching between energy suppliers.
” The last fund is particularly designed to benefit vulnerable residents.
“At a time when energy prices are rocketing upwards, the council should be taking a greater lead with these initiatives, rather than the lukewarm approach they seem to be adopting.”
