THE Rugby League World Cup trophy visited Warrington Town Hall to mark the one year countdown to the tournament.
Jon Dutton from the RFL, the organisers of the event, brought the silverware to the monthly meeting of the borough council and the official host town flag was hoisted above the Town Hall for the very first time.
Samoan rugby star Freddie Tuilagi came along on the night as the town will provide the base for the South Pacific team in the weeks leading up to the games.
The Samoan team will be staying in Warrington and using the Warrington Wolves’ state-of-the-art training facilities at the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester.
Samoa will be playing their first match against New Zealand at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on October 27 next year.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of the council said: “It was fantastic to officially mark the countdown to the World Cup and it was great to have Freddie as our special guest. We’re so proud to be a host town and we know the Samoan team and all visitors who come to watch this world class event in Warrington will be given a very warm welcome.”
