Council should introduce living wage – MP

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is calling for the borough council to introduce the “living wage” for staff to tackle inequality and child poverty.
She has written to the leader of the council, Cllr Terry O’Neill, asking him to introduce this for permanent and agency staff.
The MP said: “Many Labour councils have already brought in the ‘living wage’ for employees and staff employed by agencies. If places like Birmingham, Preston and Glasgow can do it, there is no reason why Warrington can’t.
“Even Liverpool and Newcastle, two of the councils hardest hit by the Government’s spending cuts, are looking to introduce this. The reasons are simple. Not only is it fair for some of the poorest people in our community but it helps tackle inequality and child poverty.”
She said it also helps the local economy, as people on low wages are more likely to shop locally.
She said: “Other council’s are using their purchasing power to secure the living wage for those working for their contractors, through the procurement process. Warrington should look at doing the same.”

  1. I remember having a discussion with a tory voter when the minimum wage was being discussed – naturally he saw it as a bad thing – even when I pointed out that his company, and other low paying employers, were receiving massive state subsidy through the benefit system their emplyees had to rely on.

Perhaps next time there is a report about benefit scroungers then, as well as a discussion about tax avoidance/evasion, there should be a league table of those businesses who are costing the taxpayer through their employees having to rely on teh benfit system while the business makes large profits.

    Well said Ms Jones.
