Drive to reduce cycle thefts

POLICE have launched a new cycle theft initiative in a bid to reduce the number of bikes stolen in the town – last year the number was 450.
Crime reduction advisor Kyla Hall is leading a bike marking scheme supported by cycle retailers in the town. It will also look at security advice for bike owners.
A central database has been launched to support the scheme which can be accessed by officers to determine ownership when checks are made.
Kyla said: “There has recently been an increase in thefts of pedal cycles and it is important that owners take steps to secure their property further.
“Officers are currently experiencing issues with the investigation of such crimes because victims rarely know the details of their bike, leaving little for them to go on.”
Cyclists are advised to record all their bike details on a form provided by Cheshire Police which is available at bike retailers.
