A SPATE of purse thefts at Warrington has led to a warning from police.
In particular, a number of purses have been stolen from the Morrison’s supermarket, in Greenall’s Avenue, off Wilderspool Causeway.
In one case, an 88-year-old woman had her purse, cheque book and cash card stolen after leaving her bag open in a trolley.
Her cash card was later used to withdrawn £350 cash from her account.
PC Nicola Anderton is advising shoppers to be vigilant.
She said: “Our advice is for shoppers to keep their purses safe in their handbags and their handbags zipped and secured at all times.”
A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the theft from the woman and has since been released on bail.
Police are issuing purse bells which alert shopping to would-be thieves.
Anyone who would like one can pick one up from the help desk at Stockton Heath Police Station.
