Challenging myths about gypsies

WARRINGTON Borough Council is supporting Gypsy Roma Traveller month – starting with a health and wellbeing day at Warrington Market today (Saturday).
The event is open for people of all ages to drop in to and pick up information – which it is hoped will challenge myths and tackle prejudice.
Similar events will be held at at Meadow View Children’s Centre, Culcheth from Tuesday to Thursday and Cygnets Children’s Centre, Appleton from Monday to Thursday.
Activities and information will be available and the days are suitable for children under five years of age.
Representatives in the borough council’s children and young people’s services team have been working with schools to raise awareness of gypsies and travellers.
Stockton Heath Primary School, for example, has invited a traditional Spanish flamenco dancer and guitarist to perform for pupils and they will also be telling stories about Gypsy heritage and culture.
A special display about Gypsy Roma Travellers will go on display in the new community library at the Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub from Saturday June 30 to Tuesday July 10.
There are around 300,000 Gypsies, Roma and Travellers in Britain and their roots in the country can be traced back over 500 years.
The awareness month seeks to raise awareness and explore the history, culture and language of these communities, to challenge myths and tackle prejudice.
