Time to think of the elderly…

RESIDENTS of Warrington are being urged to think about older people and vulnerable adults in their communities to mark World Elder Abuse Day tomorrow (Friday).
The Safeguarding Adults Board, supported by the borough council, wants people to take notice, be alert and act to help older people and vulnerable adults stay safe across the town.
Aim of the day is to raise awareness about abuse and neglect of older people.
There will be information stalls at Warrington Interchange and the Market between 10am-3pm to raise awareness of how to recognise and report abuse, and to offer advice.
Representatives from the council’s safeguarding team, domestic abuse service and OPEG (Older People’s Engagement Group) will be handing out purple ribbons which symbolise the worldwide event.
They will also be available to talk to people and offer information and advice in an informal setting.
Older people who are vulnerable can become a target for abusive behaviour and practices as they are less able to protect themselves. Abuse can be financial, sexual, psychological, neglect or discriminatory as well as physical.
Cllr Pat Wright, executive member for health, wellbeing and adult services at the council, said: “The council is committed to ensuring that all vulnerable residents are able to live safely, free from fear of abuse, neglect or victimisation. Events such as this are also important as they help us promote the help and advice that is available to support people.”
Anyone who wants to speak to someone in confidence or who is worried about an elderly family member of friend can contact the access social care team on 01925 444239 Mon-Fri 8.30-5pm, out of hours 444400 or a local police station on 101, out of hours 01925 652222.
