Students discover science

STUDENTS on Warrington’s Discovery Scholarship – an initiative to get more young people involved in science and engineering – have been given an insight into the nuclear industry.
The youngsters visited Sellafield’s Hinton House as part of a year-long programme designed to bring them closer to the local science and engineering industry.
Run by Warrington Borough Council, the scholarship is sponsored by local science and engineering companies looking to develop the skills of young people.
On the visit, students worked as teams to design and build something that would allow them to move nuclear fuel from a fuel pond safely and then put it to the test.
Paul Adams, head of engineering design capability, said: “There is a great passion throughout the engineering community for encouraging young people into science and engineering and the Discovery Scholarship provides an opportunity to do this with school children in our area.”
The students will continue on the scholarship for the next two years, during which they’ll receive mentoring and support from the sponsoring companies.
