BOROUGH Council chiefs have issued a reminder that in Warrington, this weekend is only the start of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
After the street parties, picnics and other events of today, tomorrow and Monday, Warrington will be staging its own giant, 1950s-style street party next Saturday, June 9, as part of the Big Lunch extravaganza.
People can either take their own lunch, or buy it in the town centre where there will be designated seating areas.
There will be a traditional British street market offering a wide variety of food and drink.
During the day there will be a family entertainment and attractions to add to the party spirit and make the day really enjoyable.
One feature will be a parade of giant queens through the town centre – accompanied by Warrington Market manager Stephen Pickering riding a giant chicken in aid of the Mayor’s charities – BLESMA, St Joseph’s Family Centre and the Warrington Charities Trust.
Anyone who wants to sponsor Mr Pickering can do so at the information desk in the market.
Other attractions include:
*Traditional entertainment, including swing boats, helter-skelter, knobbly knees competition, bingo, Punch and Judy and Dr Who and the Daleks.
*A flotilla of boats will sail along the River of Life in Bridge Street.
*A full-size Spitfire fighter aircraft.
Cllr Mike Hannon (pictured), deputy leader of the council said: “This is going to be an historic event that people will remember for a very long time and I hope that as many people as possible come along and join in.
“We’ve got some fantastic entertainment planned to help everyone get into the party spirit and to bring our communities together for what promises to be a wonderful day.
“This event will follow all the local street parties that will have taken place the weekend before and will be a marvellous end to all the celebrations.”
