Picnic on the village green

A JUBILEE “Picnic on the Park” is being held on the village green at Culcheth on Sunday.
The event starts at 1pm and continues until 5.30pm and has been organised by Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council.
Ten local acts will be performing on a stage at the side of the green to provide entertainment for assembled guests.
Villagers are being encouraged to take their own tables, parasols and any food and drink they want – but Jubilee picnics, refreshments and ice cream will also be on sale throughout the afternoon.
There will be organised games and races in a “mini Olympics” for youngsters.
Borough and parish councillor Chris Vobe is encouraging all residents to attend the event which will “embrace the whole community.”
He said: “This Sunday, my team and I will be hosting the Jubilee ‘Picnic on the Park’ – an event that is open for any Culcheth and Glazebury residents. It will have something for everyone.
“The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is a landmark weekend that everyone can celebrate. That’s why our event is designed to bring together everyone in the village – from families, to pensioners, to local businesses.
“If you’re free on Sunday afternoon, why not come along and be assured of a warm welcome from my team and I.”
A number of other Jubilee events are taking place in Culcheth, including a “Jubilee tea party” for parents and grandparents at Culcheth Pre-School today (Friday) and a “picnic on the park” organised by the newly-formed Mee Brow Community Association tomorrow (Saturday) starting at 12 noon.
Lots of fun and games are promised.

  1. Is Vobe now the designated spokesman when seeking quotes from Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council?

His use of “my team and I” twice is a sign of the arrogance of the man. I simply ‘we’ would have done.

  2. Whatever your political tendencies, why denigrate the man before he has had a chance to get his feet under the Town Hall table as a Councillor? However you chose to look at him, Cllr Vobe gained office by winning an overwhelming majority in a fair election. From various local sources I have heard he secured his victory by personally pounding the local pavements, knocking on many many doors in all weathers, and championing a number of tangible local causes of concern. Whereas the campaign of the previous incumbent seemed to be limited to a leaflet drop listing a litany of past deeds, many of which seemed to have no immediate local link. Politicians of all parties, past and present, have a tended to put themselves in the public eye by one means or another, by outrageously claiming credit for things in which they have had no or very little involvement. It’s no more arrogant than say an Architect boasting he/she “has built this or that building”, when really others have done the actual building to their basic design. I’m not a member of Cllt Vobe’s team, as he chooses to call it, but I do believe he should be given a chance to prove his political metal.
