A MEMORIAL to a Warrington soldier who was killed in Afghanistan two years ago will be unveiled this evening.
Crosfields Amateur Rugby League Club will unveil the Tom Sephton Memorial Wall in their clubhouse at 7.30pm.
Tom, aged 20 (pictured), a former member of the club and a private in the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, died in July 2010 of wounds sustained during service in Afghanistan. He was wounded in an explosion while on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.
Tonight’s ceremony will also be used to launch this year’s Tom Sephton Memorial Trophy match, between a Crosfields XIII and the Army Rugby League Corps Champions, The Royal Engineers, on June 30 – Armed Forces Day.
The annual match has become one of the biggest amateur Rugby League games in the area.
In addition, tonight will see framed photographs from previous Trophy events, plus Regimental plaques from those who have taken part, on display.
Tom’s family and friends as well as his comrades from 1 M ercian and the wider military community will be in attendance.
Also present will be representatives from SSAFA – the armed services charity to benefit from this year’s match – The Rugby Football League, Warrington Borough Council and others.
The Tom Sephton Memorial Trophy is a bronze figure of a British Soldier and an 81mm Mortar. It was presented to Tom’s family in 2010 by soldiers from 1 Mercian on behalf of the 1Mercian Mortar Platoon – Toms’ Platoon.
