MP worried about town's economy

MP Helen Jones has called on the Government to take action to boost jobs and growth in Warrington, following the surprise news that the UK economy has slipped back into recession.
Official figures show that since October last year the economy has shrunk by 0.5 per cent.
The Warrington North MP said: “The figures just go to show that the Tory-led Government is failing to deliver a plan for jobs and growth and the economy is in reverse.
“People across Warrington can see that the economy is struggling and they deserve better from this Government. The economy was growing under Labour and unemployment was falling.
“I am concerned about the impact the news will have on the Omega development and other business sites in Warrington, as these are the places that have been ear-marked for creating new jobs for Warrington.
“The Government needs to rethink its ideologically driven stance on the economy and implement Labour’s five point plan for jobs which would create 100,000 jobs for young people and get the economy moving again.”
The Office for National Statistics said a sharp fall in output by the construction industry was behind the unexpected contraction.
Some other recent business surveys have painted a more positive picture of the economy.
David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “These figures are at odds with the experiences of many UK businesses, which continue to operate with guarded optimism.”
He expected the preliminary estimate to be revised upwards when more information became available.
