Rotary to the rescue!

THE Rotary Club of Lymm have come to the rescue of a family in the Philippines who lost their home and all their possessions in a tropical storm.
The club made a £590 donation to ShelterBox immediately providing the family with humanitarian aid in the form of shelter, warmth and dignity.
Every year 35 million people are displaced or made homeless by disasters.
Rotary President John Beard said: “We’ve all seen on our TV newsreel pictures of families sheltering under plastic sheeting or cramped in classrooms with only a handful of possessions.
” ShelterBox is a registered charity and a global Rotary Club project which responds instantly to disasters all around the world.”
He explained how the box itself can be used for many functions from a food or water container, to a baby’s cot. It contains a disaster relief tent for up to 10 people which will withstand extreme temperatures, intense UV light, high winds and heavy rainfalls. It is partitioned to allow families to divide the space in a way that suits them best. Also, there are fleece blankets, insulating ground sheets, tools, and a wood or multi-fuel burning stove, cooking utensils, bowls and mugs. There are even small gifts for the children – drawing books crayons and pens. When a child loses all their possessions these simple items become their treasures. A ShelterBox contains all the vital tools necessary for family to start rebuilding their lives.
Rotary International and ShelterBox have just signed a project partner agreement that will allow the two organisations to collaborate more closely to provide relief and temporary shelter to the survivors of disasters.
Lymm Rotary is keen to hear from men and women who would like to use their experience for the benefit of others in their international, national and community projects. Please telephone John Beard (01925) 758398 for more information.
