A TARGETED police operation has cut the number of heavy lorries illegally passing through the Burtonwood and Collins Green areas of Warrington.
Eighty warning letters were sent to companies whose vehicles were seen passing through the area in contravention of a 7.5 tonne weight limit.
But only five were repeat offenders – and some companies wrote apologising to residents and undertaking to instruct their drivers to find other routes.
PCSO Richard Unsworth, who co-ordinated Operation Bluebird, said the issue had been highlighted at a well-attended community action meeting in August last year when it was identified as a priority by residents.
But PCSO Unsworth said not all heavy lorries passing through the area were breaking the law.
The weight restriction did not cover lorries making deliveries to the area and on an enforcement day in Marcy, more than half the vehicles stopped had legimate access.
But the number of lorries passing through had significant reduced since the operation was launched in October.
