Celebrating three-year woodland project

AN exhibition opens at Warrington Museum on March 31 celebrating the achievements of a three-year Woodland Communities Project which featured 10 woods including four from the Warrington area.
The project aimed to encourage local people to enjoy the natural environment on their doorstep, while improving their skills and experience.
Funding came from Access to Nature, a scheme run by Natural England and funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
The four Warrington woods were Gorse Covert Mounds, Mary Anne Plantation, Seeds Plantation and Small Woods.
Artwork about the woods, created by local people will be on show in the exhibition, which runs until April 28.
Tim Kirwin, project manager for the Woodland Communities Project, said: “Throughout this project, we have been able to involve local children and adults with the woods on their doorsteps, through a variety of interesting and educational activities.
“None of this would have been possible without the funding the Woodland Trust received from Access to Nature, which enabled us to employ two members of staff to work with schools and the community during the three years of the project. We hope that the seeds we have sown will continue to grow after our direct involvement ends.”
More than 3,000 schoolchildren and 664 staff from 32 schools have taken part in a Woodland Discovery session.
Twenty two major events, and numerous smaller ones, have been delivered to thousands of local people, with the aim of inspiring their engagement with the woods on their doorsteps.
Mr Kirwin said the challenge now, was to continue to involve people when the project ends at the end of the month.
