DISCOVERY Scholarship students from Warrington have been attending after-school sessions at a major engineering consultancy to learn more about the company’s work.
The youngsters have been behind-the-scenes at AMEC at Birchwood, touring the facilities, seeing a wide range of research and testing equipment and being introduced to the importantance of health and safety.
The The Discovery Scholarship has been set up by Warrington Borough Council, in partnership with a number of major firms, to give young people a realistic view of modern industry by working closely with local employers.
AMEC is part of a company which provides world-wide consultancy, engineering and project management services to the oil and gas, minerals and metals, clean energy and environment markets.
The students were also encouraged to consider how they might fit into the working environment and how they might access a company such as AMEC.
Students heard from apprentices and graduate trainees to learn about progression routes in the company.
Cllr Colin Froggatt, Warrington Borough Council’s executive member for children and young people, said: “The Discovery Scholarship is a fantastic initiative that teaches pupils about the modern world of work in the expanding science and technology field. I’m delighted to hear that the young people involved have gained such valuable experience from their visit to AMEC and look forward to hearing more in future about their progress.”
Dr Brian Handy of AMEC, said: “It is vital that young people pursue careers in science, engineering and technology at all levels and AMEC is delighted to be involved with Warrington Council to promote the fantastic opportunities that a career in these disciplines can bring. It is hoped that the visits and meeting with our staff will foster an interest that leads to our next generation of scientists and engineers.”
