Top honour for Rotarian Don

ROTARIAN Don Smith from Lymm has been presented with Rotary’s highest award in recognition of his community service.
Don Smith has given many years of “Service before Self” to the Rotary Club of Lymm and has always been keen to work for the local community.
One of his “specialities” is to MC the Rotary club’s Senior Citizens’ Party, so it was fitting that at this year’s party Rotary Club President, John Beard, recognised Don’s service by presenting him with a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Apart from the party, Don served on the club’s Community Service committee for many years.
He also spent a lot of time maintaining the old Christmas float and trailer. When the trailer failed its MOT after 36 years’ service he was part of a small team which spent three months transfixing the old float onto the new trailer.
Outside of Rotary he was involved with the small group of volunteers who, for more than two years, completely gutted and refurbished the Lymm Community Centre and Youth Club.
On a Thursday, together with his wife, Joyce, he provides breakfasts for the Market Traders and shoppers at the Community centre where they also organise a monthly social for Senior Citizens, including a tea – and all free of charge.
For many years Don was a local Scout Leader.
