MP welcomes cold weather payments

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones has welcomed cold weather payments for some of the poorest groups of people in the borough as a result of the recent freezing weather.
As the average temperature fell below OºC for seven consecutive days between February 4-10, payments of £25 a week were triggered to some pensioners and vulnerable families.
Ms Jones said: “When freezing temperatures strike it is important that people, particularly the elderly, feel confident that they can afford to keep the heating on. The £25 cold weather payment can mean low income families not having to make the awful choice between heating or eating.
“I was pleased to be part of the last Labour Government that increased the cold weather payment from £8.50 per week to £25.”
Payments should be made automatically to all those who are entitled to them and there should be no need for an individual to make a claim.
When cold weather payments are “triggered” it normally takes three working days for payment to be made into the accounts of those who are eligible.
People who think they may be entitled but do not receive a payment should contact the Pension, Disability and Carers Service, or Jobcentre Plus.
The cold weather payments “season” runs until March 31.
